Handicrafts of Mayurbhanj

INTRODUCTION

The handicrafts in the district of Mayurbhanj (Odisha) were in a manner acknowledged as an important part of rich cultural heritage of this region. Now though this sentiment continues to be repeated there is pronounced change in the general attitude towards crafts, which is completely unsetting our basic sense of life values. For though handicrafts fulfilled a positive physical need in the daily requirements of the people of this region, they also served to satisfy the aesthetic hunger in man and provided a vehicle for his urge for self-expression which reveals a conscious aesthetic approach. The concept behind the handicrafts of this region as originally conceived was imbuing everything used in the daily life, no matter how common or insignificant with touch of beauty to add brightness to an otherwise dull and drab existence. The handicrafts of late got partially submerged under the rising forces of modern industrialization with its high mechanization, and lost their basic role in the over all perspective. Efforts are being made to find new market now for the handicrafts of this region, hence it is necessary to adapt certain changes particularly in the forms of improved product, design, efficient production technique. At the same time scrupulous care is being taken to prevent any violence to the folk character and rustic vitality of these handicrafts and preserve their beauty of form and colour, perfected over long centuries. Craftsman of this region are now also trained to use, in articles of modern use traditional motifs and designs without vulgarizing them.

Handicrafts of Mayurbhanj are available in several materials and forms namely stone carving, stone wares, Dhokra, Brass & Bell Metal wares, Artistic Mats, Wooden painted items, lacquered toys, Terracotta, Sabai-Grass product, Cane & Bamboo products, Musical Instruments, Costume Jewellery, Folk paintings, Tassar Textiles, Solapith work and Sea shell items.

But the major handicrafts among them being developed in organated chusters are stone carving, Dhokra casting & Sabai grass products. The detailed narration of products with photographs; name of important artisane / enterprises etc are recorded in following chapters.

DHOKRA (ART METAL CASTING):

The “Cire perdue” (Lost wax method) of casting in metal of the sithulias (Dhokras) are typical example of Mayurbhanj metal castings. The dhokras are adivasis and like their counterparts in Dhenkanal & Keonjhar district and neighboring state of West Bengal they used to make metal casting items purely for house-hold use. They are a nomadic tribe and roaming about from place to place to find their living by marketing their products. A few years ago the primitive vigour and character of the Dhokra metal ware was discovered and there has since been a rising demand for these products. Gradually these artisans were settled in various villages / hamlets i.e. Pariakuli and Kuliana in Kuliana Block, Kudiakhunta in G.B. Nagar Block, Chitrada in Moroda Block and Bholbeda in Bisoi Block. The major raw materials are natural wax from beehives fine wood/ charcoal and bell-metal etc., which are locally available. At present about 300 artisan are working in the trade at different pockets of the district.

SABAI GRASS PRODUCT:

Sabai grass is grown in a wide part of Mayurbhanj district which is mainly used for making Sabai Rope. Sabai Ropes are mostly sold out side the state for use in weaving Charpai (Cots) and in paper manufacturing concerns. Sabai rope is also used in making Sofa sets, Chairs, Tea Poy etc. The main body frames of the Chairs and sofas are made in Bamboo and wood and Sabai rope is woven and coiled over the frame to give a finishing shape, which attains exceptional excellence. The civil Jail of Baripada is pioneer in introducing such Sofa and some other items namely Car mats, Screens, Carpets etc.

In recent years utility articles like Dining mat; Fruit Basket/Tray; Flower vess etc. are produced by using jute twine along with Sabai rope with intervention of National Council of Jute Development.

Development Commissioner Handicrafts Govt. of India through their facilitating agency ANWESA, Bhubaneswar have conducted design development program at village Churuni of Khunta Block by involving the traditional sabai craft artisans and 17 (seventeen) prototypes in sabai rope has been developed, which looks beautiful and shall fetch good market price. The sabai product making is thus a flourishing handicraft trade of the district. At present about 50 artisans are engaged in sabai product making exclusively in Baripada and Betnoti Block areas.

With grow-ing demand for Sabai grass furniture and sabai products, one training centres have been opened at Baripada by Director Handicraft and Cottage industry Odisha to train local boys and girls particularly from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe groups. There is one NGO in the name of DASI at Madhuban in Baripada for production of Sabai-Jute diversified products. They have participated in various State level and out state exhibition and sold their articles.
