Introduction:
District Supply and Marketing Society (DSMS), Mayurbhanj was registered under Societies Registration Act of 1860 having registration no. 4181374, dated 06.01.1994. It is a district unit of Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) Bhubaneswar, an apex state level marketing organization under administrative control of Panchayati Raj Department, Government of Odisha.
It was established with a mandate to provide non-credit inputs like procurement/purchase of raw material and sale of erstwhile IRDP/DWCRA/ TRYSEM products. At present DSMS is engaged in market promotion and facilitating marketing of SGSY and SHG products.
Collector and District Magistrate is the Chairperson and Project Director, DRDA is the Vice Chairperson of the DSMS. A development professional is Chief Executive of DSMS, deputed by ORMAS, Bhubaneswar.
Functions:
Attending exhibitions at state, national and international level with rural ethnic products depicting culture and folklore of Mayurbhanj.
Organising Pallishre Mela and District Level Exhibition.
Assisting DRDA in implementing SGSY scheme from planning to implementation stage.
Preparation of model project report based on cluster approach under SGSY scheme.
Formulation of unit cost under SGSY for individual and group finance.
Developing two key products covering all aspects of micro enterprise right from market identification, technology transfer, improvement of productivity and quality, organizing skill development training, bank credit linkage and market tie-up.
Organising training/workshop on related topics design development, product development, micro enterprise development etc for block level functionaries, bankers, NGos, ICDS staff and for swarojgaris.
Major activities:
1. DSMS is facilitating sale of forest honey to the bulk buyers. Some portion is being processed, packaged and marketed under ‘ORMAS’ brand name.
2. Pressed sal leaf cups and plates produced by SHGs and SGSY swarojgaris is being marketed to bulk buyers at Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
3. Swarojgaris of Siali leaf plate stitching activity under SGSY scheme are linked with bulk buyers.
4. DSMS represent district in various exhibitions like IITF, Regional SARAS, Gramshree melas Pallishree melas etc.
5. DSMS has been appointed by IOCL as its distributor of LPG Cylinders (Indane) through retail outlets owned by SHGs under ‘Shakti Gaon’ scheme.
6. DSMS is also involved in marketing of various NTFPs and organic agricultural produce.

With recent paradigm shift in the focus of DSMS activities at Government level, now DSMS is also providing consultancy services against service charge to various
agencies.
DSMS has already rendered consultancy services for planning of projects like PURA (Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) in Mayurbhanj.

I. Forest Honey
Bounty of Mother Nature
Honoured and nourishing since ancient times, this gift from Mother Nature is appealing to everyone. Not to mention its rich fructose content, vitalizing enzymes and anti oxidants, which makes it a perfect source of energy and an anti ageing agent. The honey in its purest form is being collected by Khadias and Kolho (Ho), traditional tribal honey gatherers of ‘Simlipal’ forest, which is enriched with endogenous floral diversity. They collect honey from natural hives of Rock bees. (Apis dorsata) locally known as ‘Baghua’.
The traditional skills of these tribals have been upgraded with the help of NGOs Dharamitra and CSV, Wardha (Maharashtra) infusing ecological collection method. This had paved way towards sustainable source of income to the tribes and making honey hygienic and delicious.
Season : October to December and April to June
Potential : 20-25 Metric tonne per year

II. Siali leaf plates and Buffet plates
Elegant and Eco-friendly
Gracefully stitched pressed bio-degradable siali leaf buffet plates are a cheap hygienic and ecological substitute for thermocol and plastic plates. The natural green colour with wild deciduous essence makes it ideal for parties and gatherings.
Siali (Bauhinia Vahili) is a woody climber, found deep inside the forest. After monsoon the newly flushed leaves are hand plucked, partially sun dried and stitched by the tribal women. These women were organized as SHGs under SGSY scheme and provided with sewing machine for thread stitching of leaves to reduce their drudgery and
improve productivity. This is a true example of confluence of traditional knowledge and modern technology.
The stitched leaf plates are cut in to uniform size and packed as per buyer’s demand. For buffet plates, they are machine pressed with cardboard at base.
Season of availability: May to December.
Potential: 25 -30 lakhs thread stitched plates per year (10 truck loads)

Rs. 28-32 per 100 nos of thread stitched plates according to size.

III. Sal leaf plates and cups
Dusky and Dignified
Mature Sal leaves are intricately adjoined with traditional knowledge in to plates, trays and cups, which are widely preferred by increasingly eco-conscious world. Its glistening dusky golden colour adds dignity to celebrations of any nature, especially in pujas, marriages and festivals.
The well-known timber-yielding tree Sal (Shorea robusta) is a dominant member of district flora. Its durable leaves are a source of income to the tribal, which are hand plucked by tribal women.
The leaves are not collected during months of July-Sep and Jan –March to strengthen the regenerative coppicing capacity of the stock.
The leaves are stitched with Neem/Bamboo sticks (Khadika) and cured under sun with utmost care to avoid fungal attack. Then they are machine pressed to give desired size and shape by SHG members and are packed as per buyers/market demand.

IV. Dhokra
An antique expression
Done with great skill and meticulousness by the adroit artisans of the district these metal cast figures with intriguing wirework finish are well exquisite décor pieces.

These masterpieces will attract your attention by their expressive monumentality and altogether unusual stylization. Their characteristic feature is the rich surface decoration alternating with plain cast metal surfaces which gives the figures their lightness and elegance.
It represents images from rich Hindu mythology, ritual figures of animals and tribal life.

V. Sabai
Threaded to perfection
Made out of grass, these natural threads are transformed in to captivating designs of great utility value by the deft hands of the traditional artisans.

The eulaliopsis binata locally known as sabai, bubai or bhabhar is naturally grown grass found in sandy lateritic soil of eastern part of the district. The grass has great coppicing power and can be harvested two times in a year. After harvesting the grass is immediately sun dried for 2-3 days to retain its natural greenish yellow colour and then stored in bundles. The ropes are hand made with application of water, which are then dried and polished to bring out its lustre.

Various utility items like baskets, bags, tablemats, doormats, wall hanging and sofas are made out of it. Due to its rich fibrous nature it is best suited for production of high class printing paper.
It also has possible uses in Non Wood Paper and Composite Wood Industries. The fibers may be treated chemically to increase their strength, resistance and durability. Being natural product the ropes are widely preferred over synthetic threads by Forest Divisions for binding and supplying of bamboos to paper mills.

VI. Stone Carving
Memories etched for ever
The grandeur of a heritage evolved over the centuries, that gave the likes of Konark, Lingaraj and Jagannath is recreated with passion from black granite stones of khiching with enchanting fineness.

VII. Sarees
Poetry in colours and patterns
Glorifying the ‘Ikkat’ out of tie and dye to exacting processes in cotton and famed tassar silk, they conjure a myriad arrangement that is at once unique, luxuriant, vibrant and is tribute to the mastery of the weavers of this high traditional art.
